Time For A Speed Draw!

Hi amazing people! I’m back with another speed draw. Today, I want to talk about secondary characters. This story is all about meeting new people, discovering new places and taking on a new experiences. It was important to have a wide range of characters. I also wanted to show diversity, so the best way to achieve this (with animals) was to include different species and animals interacting with each other. This helped drive the message that we are all different, and that’s ok. If you think about it, who wants to be the same anyway. If I ever create a sequel to this book, I’d love to include a wider range of different animals and crazier, adventurous places.

Anyway, like always, feel free to comment or leave feedback below.

Time for another Speed Draw!

Hello amazing people! I’m back with another speed draw. Today I want to share one of my favourite illustrations. This was the last picture I drew, it came to me easy because I had this image in my head even before I even had the book written. It just sums up this book perfectly. I love the idea that the fox is looking back but is moving forward. My inspiration behind this was to show that we are always moving forward, opening new doors, exploring new places, yet even though we are always changing, somewhere deep inside, we don’t forget where we have been and the amazing experiences we have had on the way. Where there is a down, there is always going to be an up, and vice versa. It’s an adventure just waiting to be explored.

I purposely put this illustration at the very back of the book because it lightly shows character development in the smallest way, but makes a great impact. At the start of the book, the fox is just looking at the doors, too afraid to go through or give it a try. Towards the middle the fox is trying doors to see if it would open, and by the end, the fox is happily walking through doors into the unknown. It’s about the journey, and not the destination.

Time for another speed draw!

Hi everyone! Today I’m back with another speed draw and today I want to share one of my biggest challenges. Framing. Coming from an animation background I’m not used to sharing the space/image with text as it’s usally replaced with sound. Sometimes I’d start drawing and forget all about the fact that I need to add text. Oops! To avoid this issue next time, it sometimes helps to leave a square or a blank space as a placeholder for where the text is going to go, then draw around it. I didn’t think too much about framing because I wanted to get the book finished, and getting picky about the angle, and the shot size (Close up, long shot, etc.) was preventing me from completing it. As long as it got the main point across and matched that words, that’s all that mattered. It started off as a project that was just for fun, nothing too serious.

Time for Another Speed Draw!

Hey, I’m back with another speed draw! and today I’m going to share with you one of the trickiest pages I illustrated. I wanted to try and squeeze as much as possible into the drawing, what made it harder is that it was a double page. I had to be mindful that the middle of the page would be partly cut off due to the binding. Something I forgot when making this page was the text. I knew where it would roughly go, but I forgot to leave a space for it. Oops. Anyway, it all worked out in the end. 😊

Time for another speed draw!

Hey! I’m back with another speed draw! Today I’m looking at changes and revisions. First idea’s don’t always work and that’s ok. You want to experiment anyway. Sometimes the first picture I drew was fine, and I kept it at that, other times I’d start drawing something but then find out that it works better on another page with different text. Change is part of the development process so don’t be afraid to embrace it. It helps you grow as both an artist and as a person. Sometimes when I look back on some of my old work, I internally cringe. There’s so much I’d change, and some work I’d scrap completely. We are our worst critics, I’m sure in another 5 years I’m going to look back at my work now and cringe again. The good thing about cringing is that is shows growth, you have grown from that skill set you used to have and bettered yourself.
