Time for Another Speed Draw!

Hi amazing people! I’m back with another speed draw and today I wanted to focus on the back cover. This wasn’t as tricky to draw compared to the front cover since I already had an idea of what I wanted to do, but it was still a fun challenge. I was constantly weighing up how much detail I should add considering that half of the image would be cut off due to the blurb at the back, and barcode. It was tricky trying to fit all the information I needed, plus have the illustration work with the information.

Time for another speed draw!

Hi everyone! Today I’m back with another speed draw and today I want to share one of my biggest challenges. Framing. Coming from an animation background I’m not used to sharing the space/image with text as it’s usally replaced with sound. Sometimes I’d start drawing and forget all about the fact that I need to add text. Oops! To avoid this issue next time, it sometimes helps to leave a square or a blank space as a placeholder for where the text is going to go, then draw around it. I didn’t think too much about framing because I wanted to get the book finished, and getting picky about the angle, and the shot size (Close up, long shot, etc.) was preventing me from completing it. As long as it got the main point across and matched that words, that’s all that mattered. It started off as a project that was just for fun, nothing too serious.

Time for another speed draw!

Hey! I’m back with another speed draw! Today I’m looking at changes and revisions. First idea’s don’t always work and that’s ok. You want to experiment anyway. Sometimes the first picture I drew was fine, and I kept it at that, other times I’d start drawing something but then find out that it works better on another page with different text. Change is part of the development process so don’t be afraid to embrace it. It helps you grow as both an artist and as a person. Sometimes when I look back on some of my old work, I internally cringe. There’s so much I’d change, and some work I’d scrap completely. We are our worst critics, I’m sure in another 5 years I’m going to look back at my work now and cringe again. The good thing about cringing is that is shows growth, you have grown from that skill set you used to have and bettered yourself.

If you could open a door to anywhere, where would you go?

If you could open a door that leads anywhere, where would you go? Feel free to comment in the section below. I’d love to have one of those doors like in Howls moving Castle where you can pick different a different location each time. How cool would that be! I think I might have one door that leads to the library, another to the beach, maybe one that leads to the city. That would be helpful when catching up with friends! You’d just open one door instead of having to take the train in.

Time For another Speed Draw!

Hey, I’m back with another speed draw! Today I want to talk about colours! Colouring in an illustration can one of the most fun yet frustrating things. What worked for me, is before even starting, I made a quick model sheets of the main characters and locked in the colours and design. Feel free to try all sorts of colours. Personally, I love bright and/or pastel colours, I like how it helps the line work stand out, but that’s just my personal taste. Once I had the main character’s colours locked in, I found it easier top pick the background colours. I needed the background colours to be darker than the main character so the main character would stand out. Where I could, I put colours into different layers so I could change it if it didn’t fit in with the others. Colour pallets help a lot when illustrating, I only had the fox’s colours since it was the only reoccurring character. Consistency is super important both in animation and illustration, especially if the image (or frame) is a follow up of the one before.

Anyway, What’s your favourite colour? Do you have just one or lots? Feel free to leave a comment in the section below.
