Time for another Speed Draw!

Hello amazing people! I’m back with another speed draw. Today I want to share one of my favourite illustrations. This was the last picture I drew, it came to me easy because I had this image in my head even before I even had the book written. It just sums up this book perfectly. I love the idea that the fox is looking back but is moving forward. My inspiration behind this was to show that we are always moving forward, opening new doors, exploring new places, yet even though we are always changing, somewhere deep inside, we don’t forget where we have been and the amazing experiences we have had on the way. Where there is a down, there is always going to be an up, and vice versa. It’s an adventure just waiting to be explored.

I purposely put this illustration at the very back of the book because it lightly shows character development in the smallest way, but makes a great impact. At the start of the book, the fox is just looking at the doors, too afraid to go through or give it a try. Towards the middle the fox is trying doors to see if it would open, and by the end, the fox is happily walking through doors into the unknown. It’s about the journey, and not the destination.

Like always, feel free to comment or leave feedback below.

What’s Your Favourite Animal?

What’s your favourite animal? It was hard trying to pick the perfect animal for ‘What’s Behind That Door?’. There was just so many choices. I thought about having the main character as a dog or a cat, but ruled this out because it was a little to over used. I wanted a character that would stand out, and one that is easy to draw. I ended up narrowing it down to two characters, a fox or a koala. They are both built with circle shapes, which helps a lot when drawing up the draft. I ended up asking my friends, and they all agreed that the fox was the better choice. Personally, I liked the fox because it’s colours really stuck out, making it the focus of the illustration. So, What’s your favourite character? Feel free to leave a comment below.

If you could open a door to anywhere, where would you go?

If you could open a door that leads anywhere, where would you go? Feel free to comment in the section below. I’d love to have one of those doors like in Howls moving Castle where you can pick different a different location each time. How cool would that be! I think I might have one door that leads to the library, another to the beach, maybe one that leads to the city. That would be helpful when catching up with friends! You’d just open one door instead of having to take the train in.

What’s Behind That Door?

Hey, I’m back with another speed draw! This time I’m going to talk about the hardest and trickiest thing to draw, the front cover. Have you ever heard the saying β€˜don’t judge a book by it’s cover’? Unfortunately, we still do judge books by their covers, it’s how we decide whether it’s worth our time. A book’s cover is what draws people in, it’s just like those sample taste testers you get in the supermarket. We buy with our eyes. It’s what took me so long to draw up a front cover, because in my mind it needed to be perfect. Something I’ve learnt through all of this, is that it’s ok to not to illustrate and draw the cover first, make the rest of the book first and come back to it. I’ve also learnt to try new things, draft our a few designs 1 to 5, and pick the best layout. The rest will come to you later. You might even find that once you start drawing it more ideas will come up or you will find more things to add or change. The possibilities are endless, anyway what I was trying to get at is just simply start.

Time For a Speed Draw!

Time for a speed draw! I made β€˜What’s behind that door?’ in Procreate with the 6B pencil brush. I wanted to make the characters look like they had jumped out from a colouring book. I suppose in a way it was a page from a colouring book. To get this style right I needed to colour the illustration manually rather than use the paint fill tool. Even though it took a little longer to colour, it was a lot of fun trying something different from my normal digital art style.
